This beautiful custom timber frame home overlooking Lake Waramaug and the Litchfield hills is a great example of the use of a wide plank character floor.  Staining the floor a darker color helped to create a uniform color, but also allowed the knots and imperfections of a character grade floor to show through.  This is perfect for a casual weekend home in the country.

It’s All in the Details

pic4 Here's 3", 4" and 6" wide, 2 - 10 foot length character white oak flooring. This job in Delaware, MD is a great example of what can be done to turn an affordable plank flooring into a beautiful custom project. If you order your wood in shorter lengths you can save money for other flooring elements. These homeowners included unique details like a compass rose as well as toe molding which creates an elegant transition from floor to wall.  .

Brown Maple Bedroom Furniture

IMG_3560 This bedroom set was made from brown maple. Our customer saw the 2-tone furniture in a catalog and wanted a high quality Amish made bedroom set. The brown maple was a perfect choice because of its smooth closed grain. Drawer fronts were left natural, and the rest including the knobs were stained dark. This turned out to be one of our favorite "looks" and was still a very affordable set..

Library Welcome Center

Library Welcome Center

Kent School, a private boarding school in Kent, CT was giving their old library a face-lift. Housatonic Hardwoods provided many new custom, solid wood shelf tops and other custom pieces through-out the library. All were stain matched to their other existing pieces. In addition, they wanted a welcome center which they could put at the front door of the library that would accommodate a computer work station and hide the power source. With a little coercion, we were able to convince one of our Amish furniture builders to construct this unusual piece out of oak with a curved front.  We will work with you on any special piece you are looking to create.

Dog Bed Platforms

Dog Bed Platforms

These beautiful custom dog bed platforms were made for a very good customer who has purchased many pieces of our furniture over the years. One of the dog beds is Oak and the other is Cherry, both with natural finish. They really look great and match the rest of the same high quality furniture found through-out their home.

The Amish Workshops

The Amish Workshops

All of our furniture is made in small Amish shops in western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio. The Amish or “Plain People” originated in Switzerland. They arrived in this country via Holland in the early 18th century and settled in Pennsylvania under William Penn where they were granted a haven from religious persecution. They have been able to preserve their German language and their way of life based on their conservative Christian religion which is centered in the Bible concept “Be ye not conformed to the world.”

Their workshops tend to specialize in certain types of furniture — all of our rockers and single gliders are made in one shop, but the two and three seater gliders are made in a different shop. Another shop makes the major pieces like beds, dressers, chests, armoires; another specializes in tables of all sizes and styles; while still another does all small pieces such as quilt racks, children’s furniture, end tables and the like. Altogether there are more than 10 shops making all of the items we stock. Pieces can come natural or in a limited number of stains. All are coated with a clear commercial finish. Part of the Amish ethic engages the young people in these trades and/or farming so that these communities are deeply family oriented with a strong work-directed climate and high standards of performance and industry. This is reflected in the workmanship in every product we sell. New styles and types of furniture are constantly being developed so our showroom stock is continually changing.
